Longtime Smyth County volunteer firefighter dies while on the scene of a house fire in Marion, Va.

On September 23rd, 2020 at 2:06am, the Adwolfe Volunteer Fire Department and Marion VA Fire/EMS responded to a reported structure fire at 336 North Overlook Dr. Marion VA 24354. Upon arrival, units found the structure heavily involved with fire and smoke. The home resident was secured, fire suppression began and incident command was established.


At approx. 3:28am Firefighter/EMT Charles C. Woods was found to be unresponsive in Adwolfe Tanker 9-2 after having filled from a nearby hydrant. Marion Fire/EMS along with other personnel on scene began life saving attempts immediately. Mr. Woods was transported to Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion VA via Marion Fire/EMS Ambulance 1-2 at approx. 3:38am and arriving at the emergency department at approx. 3:48am.


Sadly, attempts to revive Firefighter/EMT Charles C. Woods were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased at 4:13am.


Firefighter Woods has faithfully served the citizens of Adwolfe and Smyth County as a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT since December of 1986. He is survived by his wife and 2 sons – both of which are Firefighters as well. Firefighter Woods will sorely be missed and will forever be remembered as Firefighter “Dog Woods”.


Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. The family and the Adwolfe Fire Department are being served by Bradley’s Funeral Home in Marion VA.
